About Hobbitt House Pottery
I had an early interest in clay in junior and senior high school in Chambersburg, PA. After graduation I enlisted in the army with recreational services in 1975 and eventually became an instructor in the Army Craft shop at Fort Dix New Jersey.
I was honorable discharged in 1978 and setup a studio in Northeast Philadelphia to help a friend with a pottery distributionship. I wintered there and moved to the Fairfield area in 1979 and established Hobbitt House Pottery in an old log home in the hillside.
I did raku pottery for many years in addition to working with porcelains. I later rebuilt a sprung arch kiln at my current studio. I then traveled extensively in the 80's and 90's doing craft shows and working another full time job. I'm a member of the PA Guild of Craftsmen since 1978. I teach classes for several non-profit organizations. Adams County Arts Council, Chambersburg Art Council, Renfrew Museum (Waynesboro PA), and Strawberry Hill Nature Center in Fairfield.
I do a few local shows and have a studio show the first weekend of November. I also do commissions through the Nicodemous Center for Ceramic Studies and the Penn State Mont Alto Campus as well as with other non-profits in the immediate area.
I've been grateful for all of those who have supported me in the past and hope to continue to do so. I will not be attending as many shows this year for I have plans of incorporating my clay work in conjunction with Occupational Therapy to help others. I will be attending Penn State this fall.
I now mainly work in cone 10 reduction porcelains. The glazes are my own and are lead free and oven proof. I work in Oxbloods and Celadons as well as my own matte glazes. My finished work can be found at The Pottery Box (23 Chambersburg Street, Gettysburg) and at local shows.
I also teach at my studio privately. If interested contact me at classes@HobbittHousePottery.com.
